Abjad table: the number value of every Arabic letter

In the Abjad system (Hisab al-Jumal) each of the 28 Arabic letters stands for a number. The first 9 letters count 1 to 9, the next 9 count the tens up to 90, the next 9 the hundreds up to 900, and the last letter is 1,000.

The Abjad mnemonic

The order is easier to remember as 8 made-up words. Mashriqi:

ابجد هوز حطي كلمن سعفص قرشت ثخذ ضظغ

Maghribi:

ابجد هوز حطي كلمن صعفض قرست ثخذ ظغش

Mashriqi vs Maghribi

The 2 orders agree on 22 letters. They differ on 6: س ص ش ض ظ غ. Mashriqi is the common one; Maghribi comes from North Africa. So شمس is 400 in Mashriqi and 1,340 in Maghribi.

Worked example

محمد = م (40) + ح (8) + م (40) + د (4) = 92. The Abjad calculator does this for any text as you type, with optional rules for hamzah, ta marbuta, tashdeed and more.
